Chapter eleven
The whole thing ended up with my moving in with Mikael. He came over in his Fiat and helped me bring down all my school books and my entire wardrobe and a couple of different objects that had sentimental value. Among these was an ancient poster from an organization called “The Advancing Craftsmen,” with a lamb in orange against a yellow background. The whole thing looked so woolly that you wanted to feel the poster.
We had a couple of pleasant evenings with my mother and father, who both liked Mikael and though that he was very sweet to me. When I moved, my mother asked me to be sure to keep going to school regularly and asked Mikael please to be strict and at the same time help me with my history and German lessons. Both of them wanted to come over and see the apartment when they could find the time.
Down in the cellar apartment we began to feel the strain of the changes we were making in the various rooms. We sawed and sewed and painted and tore up an entire floor so that nails stuck threateningly up into the air, a danger for accidentally passing shoe soles.
The room with the torn-up floor was so cold and damp that we gave up the project right in the middle. The room’s window faced out toward the garbage cans, so we had to put up cardboard in order to be able to stay in there. The kitchen looked all right, so we let it alone, but the little hallway was painted a very lively color and Mikael’s room was completely transformed, with orange crates, of course, painted chrome yellow and dark orange. We put the television at the foot of the bed and made two places where we could sit and write. Dave’s room was also given a quick going over, and he suddenly ended up with a whole pile of all sorts of things that could not be thrown out. With the exception of the dark room with the aggressive floor, the whole apartment was in fine shape after a week’s work.
I went to school, was sometimes driven there, and Mikael kept at his job so that he would have enough money each month for the rent and the television set and the car and two stereo records plus his usual expenses. He decided that we ought to be engaged. I became very solemn, and we walked down to the Strøg and looked at rings. There were not many of them that were very pretty, but at last we found some streamlined ones that we decided were all right. Mikael ordered them and we were going to have our names engraved on each other’s ring: “Stine” and “Mikael” in cursive script, thin and ornate. They cost 385 crowns. Three hundred and eighty-five crowns! I thought that it was an exorbitant price, but Mikael didn’t look at all a if he were about to faint.
Of course, we were also going to have a big engagement party.
